Montenegrin cheese – Pljevaljski sir, at the list of 100 best cheeses in the world
The prestigious site of Taste Atlas announced a list of the best cheeses in the world. “Pljevaljski sir – Pljevlja cheese” was in 27th place before many famous world kinds of cheese: Italian mozzarella and Switzerland gruyere.
The first places were reserved for the Italian parmesan, gorgonzola, burrata, and Pljevlja cheese deserved a rating of 4.6 (of 5) on the prestigious site.
Pljevaljski sir is a staple of many Montenegrin meals. This white cheese is traditionally produced from raw cow’s milk. The cheese is characterized by its intense flavor and creamy texture. Its unique aromas result from the maturation process, which takes place in specially designed wooden barrels – the sliced cheese is salted, placed into wooden barrels, then immersed in brine. Pljevaljski sir should mature for 15 days before it is ready for consumption. The cheese is so famous that there is even an annual event called Dani Pljevaljskog Sira – Day of Pljevlja cheese”, where numerous producers from the Pljevlja region present their cheeses.
If you plan your trip to Montenegro, don’t miss the chance to taste this extraordinary cheese.
